Edward Van Sloan Edward Van Sloan
Born: November 1, 1882
Died: March 6, 1964 (at the age of 81)

On November 1, 1882, Edward Van Sloun was born in Chaska, Minnesota of German parents. Edward's father, Martin Van Sloun, and mother, Theresa (Breher) Van Sloun. Young Edward originally planned on following into the field of architecture like his father.

Edward and his widowed mother, Theresa, and siblings (rank J., Mary D., Leonora M., Alma K., Josephine), moved to San Francisco, CA. While still in school he was working on stage lighting and scenic design in a production of 'The Merchant of Venice', he was encouraged to also play a part in the show. Edward changed his name from Van Sloun to Van Sloan as he decided to pursue an acting career.

In 1908, Edward came east and made his professional acting debut and started working with stock compaines in the US and Canada. He begain his career in light comedy playing odd Englishmen. In 1916, Edward landed his first film, a silent film 'Slander' (1916), a six-reeler directed by Will S. Davis.

Edward would settle in Philadelphia, PA where he met and married the only time to Myra Jackson. They would have one child, Paul (born Feb 21, 1911 in Pennsylvania), and they were married until her death on June 1, 1960.

Van Sloan would reach Broadway in 1922 to appear in Roland West's play 'The Unknown Purple'. He would appear in more plays but when he played a doctor in the 1926 production of 'Schweiger' this would be a turning point in his career. On October 5, 1927 'Dracula' would open at the Fulton Theater in New York City, this would star Bela Lugosi in the title role. Within six months Universal Pictures was in talks with him about reprising his role as Van Helsing for the film 'Dracula' (1931) for which would be his most memorable role. This would be Van Sloans first non-silent film.

Also in 1935 he would be in 'The Last Days of Pompeii' (1935). Van Sloan would reprise his role as Professor Van Helsing in Universal's 'Dracula's Daughter' (1936) starring Gloria Holden. Due to the end of the first horror cycle with ended in 1936, Edward would work steady and did some stage work but even Universal seemed to lose interest in Van Sloan for other roles.
